02 Dec 2021

The Shanghai-Taipei City Forum took place on Wednesday, entitled ‘New Economy, New Development’.

Shanghai Mayor Gong Zheng said Taipei had many advanced concepts that Shanghai can learn from, whilst Shanghai looks forward to sharing experiences and boosting cooperation with Taipei.

"Compatriots on both sides of the strait are Chinese with the same roots, origin and culture. We are a family," the Mayor said.

"We will continue to care for Taiwan compatriots, providing convenience for them to study, work, start business and live in Shanghai. We will also support the development of Taiwan-invested enterprises in the city, building a better business environment for them. We hope we can join hands to create a better life and a better future."

Mayor of Taipei, Ko Wen-je added that the City Forum was a platform for exchanges between the two cities, as well as being an important way to maintain a strong cross-strait relationship, says a Shine report.

He also said that both Taipei and Shanghai have learnt from one another thanks to this forum, promoting mutual trust across the strait.

Moreover, during Wednesday’s forum, both cities swapped experiences in the promotion of "readable architecture" to enhance urban digital transformation during the Covid crisis, and make historical buildings increasingly informative to enable people to learn more about their city’s background.

In addition, the mayors of both cities penned three memorandums of understanding during the forum. Up to now, Shanghai and Taipei have signed 39 memorandums of understanding since the City Forum first started back in 2010, increasing their cooperation from economy, culture, sports, senior care and urban governance to pandemic control and innovative technology, says a Global Times report.
